The exception list is a caste

Every “agentic” workplace product grows an exception list.

Someone must still be reachable. Someone’s meeting must still exist. Someone’s refund must still be possible. The software cannot quite abolish human awkwardness, so it hides it in a list.

That list is a caste.

Who gets in

Managers. Named accounts. The person who knew to open Advanced. The department with a lawyer.

Who stays out: contractors, new hires, customers without a tier, the teacher, the parent, the vendor in another time zone. They experience the product as weather. It declined them. It closed the ticket. It scheduled around them.

The story we keep missing

Launch blogs talk about focus time and “taking work off your plate.” They do not mention the plate it landed on.

When a calendar starts auto-declining, someone else’s week gets worse. When support ships a policy page instead of undo, someone else spends an hour in a loop that cannot hear “this was a mistake.”

The human-default test is not “did the user save time?” It is whose time was taken, and did they get a say.

What to watch

• Whether exception lists are visible to the people they exclude.
• Whether “admin” is the only reverse gear.
• Whether schools, clinics, and public services get the same default-on treatment as consumer apps — with fewer ways out.
